In the latest statistics released by EA Sports performance index, Everton’s Leighton Baines has been ranked the top left back in the Premier League for last weekend’s games. The England international has recently just returned from injury, but he was influential in Everton’s 3-0 victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.
The rankings are made up by a number of criteria in which players score points for each game they play in. Baines scored 27 points in the game against Newcastle which earned him his place in the Premier League team of the week. This isn’t the first time Baines has been selected in the team of the week this season, and at one point this season he was ranked the top defender in the overall standings. At the start of the season Baines provided numerous assists and chipped in with the odd goals to take him to the top of the standings. However, because of injury he has slipped down the defender rankings to 4th, and has been replaced by Chelsea captain John Terry.
Everton’s victory over Newcastle at the weekend was much needed for Roberto Martinez after an indifferent season in the Premier league. The Merseyside club are the only English representatives left in the Euorpa League, but they haven’t been able to carry this form into league matches. The win on Sunday meant that no team below them made any ground on them in the table, and they are currently 7 points ahead of sides in the relegation places.
