NFL Rumors: Undrafted free agents to cash in after 2014 NFL Draft

Monday, February 24, 2014

The talent pool for the 2014 NFL draft has been dubbed the best draft in years and with the NFL combine nearly complete after three days of on-field workouts, it’s certainly shaping up to be the best talent we’ve seen at the top of the draft and the deepest with teams able to find contributors in the sixth and seventh round.

With the mass exodus of underclassmen heading to the professional ranks at a record pace I have wondered if we could see the NFL draft expand to eight or nine rounds in the near future. While that may not be a pressing issue for the NFL, several NFL front-office men are asking for more money to spend on undrafted free agents according to Dan Pompei.

“The undrafted free agents this year will be the equivalent of fifth- or sixth-round picks last year. One high-ranking exec said his team’s draft board will have about 200 draftable players—or roughly 30 percent more than there were a year ago. So the bidding for undrafted players should be much more competitive than usual, with the expectations that many of them should stick on rosters.”

The NFL draft is a three-day viewing extravaganza for NFL die-hards, but after the seventh round is over and Mr. irrelevant is selected, that won’t be the end of the hoopla as several undrafted players will find themselves in a bidding war.

It may be a more enviable position to be undrafted and have your pick of teams rather than being a seventh round pick where you are pigeon-holed into one situation.
